Week 15

A visit to Happy Lodge in Tampines on Wednesday and a visit to Khoo Tech Puat Hospital today, Friday, have been some of the exciting highlights of the week. At Happy Lodge, our children met the elderly residents in their rooms and played Bingo games with them and some even entertained the elderly uncles and aunties by singing local songs to them! It has been wonderful for our children to have this opportunity to make friends with the elderly. It certainly brought lots of smiles to everyones faces! This is a great service that allows us to develop relationships with the local community and develop empathy and care for others. The children did us proud by showing respect, communicating effectively and being independent. Thank you to all our parent volunteers for coming along on this trip.

We visited Khoo Tech Puat Hospital today and were amazed by all the different departments and wards that were shown to us. We walked into an Intensive Care unit, noticed all the equipment used to treat the patients and learned a lot about blood pressure, pulse and keeping healthy. We visited the organic roof-top garden managed by volunteers and saw amazing vegetables and flowers that are growing in the garden! A big thank you to all the nurses and doctors who took time to show us around and to Tami (Kjerstin’s mum) for helping us on the trip.

Grade1PTh truly enjoyed their cooking session today! With the help of Kjerstin’s dad and Cole’s mum, the children made delicious pizzas!! A big thank you to them and to our mystery reader, Dora’s mum, who read us a story on Thursday. 

As you are all aware, next THURSDAY is UN Day. This day is a wonderful community event and a true celebration of internationalism across the school. Remember, the children are encouraged to come to school wearing national dress of their own choosing, or, something that represents where they are from. The children are also invited to bring a small container to school so as to enjoy all the delicious treats on offer at the Food Festival. 1PTh would also like to invite you all back to the classroom AFTER the performance at around 1:00pm (we will be visiting the Food Festival at 12.30 with our Grade 3 buddy class) and take a few photos. You are free to take your children home after that. Please let us know in advance so we can be better organised.

You may have read about "The Giving Tree" on the grade announcements page. This year, we have decided to do things a little differently. As we lead up to the holiday period and give thanks for all we have, we would like to encourage the children to take a moment to think beyond themselves and donate one of their own pre-loved toys to the local charity, Toys from the Heart. Toys from the Heart provides toys to needy children in Singapore for their birthdays, various cultural festivals and at their annual toy buffet. 

From the 1st December until the 9th December, we will be asking children to donate one of their own pre-loved toys (in good quality and clean condition to this project). It is important that it is something the children already have and not something they go out to purchase from the shops. No soft toys please.

Your child can bring it into the class where we will wrap it in clear cellophane with a small card of good wishes. It will then be taken down to the Giving Tree in the Infant School foyer. 

My trip to Reggio Emilia in Italy was great. I brought back some treats to share with the class. The children were so excited to sample Italian bread and delicious Parmesan cheese from Reggio Emilia, Italy...they just gobbled it all up!
