We have been lucky enough to celebrate two birthdays on Thursday, Ms Jae’s and Kiara’s. Susanne brought in cupcakes to share for Ms Jae’s birthday and Kiara’s mum brought in doughnuts. Ms Jae too brought in cupcakes for the occasion. As you have guessed by now…it was a big sugar induced day!!
We have also been very lucky to have Teo’s mum come in as a Mystery Reader and Max’s mum do a cooking session with us. She taught us to make delicious date balls. They were so simple to make and so tasty! Here's a recipe for this:
Ingredients:
Dates: soak overnight and then take the seeds out.
Rolled Oats
Desiccated Coconut
Chia Seeds
Some optional extras are: cocoa powder, nuts (pistachio & walnut are easiest to crush) or crushed biscuits.
Blend the dates to mush.
No need to be precise as it's nice to have some chunky bits too.
Add a scoop of rolled oats
Add a scoop of desiccated coconut
Add a teaspoon of chia seeds.
Use your (child's) hands to blend all ingredients together
If the mixture is a bit gooey, add more coconut or oats.
If it's a bit dry and doesn't stick together easily, add more mushy dates.
Roll into small balls and coat these in coconut.
Done!
Character morning tea with our buddies.
We are inviting our G3 buddies to class. The buddies will chat to the 'character', so your child needs to be very familiar with their chosen character.
We need your help to:
1. Ask your child who they might chose to be (If it's a movie character they MUST have read the books this character is in)
2. Think of ONE prop and ONE item of clothing (not a full costume) which might represent their character.
3. Create a small plate of morning tea food to put on a shared table. This food needs to represent their character. eg George from Georges Marvellous Medicine might bring in some drinks and cups with creative Marvellous Medicine labels on them.
4. Create a label to go with the food. eg Flat Stanley can only eat flat sandwiches. Try his Flat Stanley sandwiches here.
Your child has taken home a planning sheet - please use this to plan the costume and snack and send the completed sheet back to us on Monday.
In our current Unit of Study, children have started to work on constructing habitats using shoe-boxes and some on posters, based on their understanding of how humans impact animal environments. This week, besides exploring more habitats, we got to watch a piece of the Singaporean Wild City Video. This video (click http://wildcity.tv/videos/) showed us amazing animals that live right here in Singapore. We saw the diversity of the urban and hidden environments that live right here in the city. It made us notice how humans impact animals environments all the time. Specially here in Singapore where people are building more and more houses and streets, destroying many homes to animals. What can we do to prevent this from happening? How can we take care of animals homes?
This week we also saw a video on the proposed Cross Island Line (http://video.toggle.sg/en/series/talking-point/ep45/378393) and had a great debate on this. The children divided into teams and debated the pros and cons of the proposed Cross Island Line right here in Singapore. We had one group determined to tunnel right through the middle of the Central Catchment Area, another trying to persuade everyone to skirt around the edge of it and, a third group trying to dissuade us all from constructing another MRT line in the first place. We also had problem solver who thought it best to come up with ingenious materials that would protect the environment while still being able to build overhead!
Next Tuesday morning, parents are welcome to join us for our "Love Your Lungs" triathlon. From 8.20 to 8.45am, 1PTh will be working as a team to see how many laps they can complete of the course. The session will involve running, swimming and cycling around the Infant playground and pool. Please make sure you send their swimmers on that day and a towel… and it might be a good idea to apply suncream as it has been pretty hot recently! Looking forward to seeing you there.
Grade 1 will be starting swimming in the main pool from Monday May 23rd to June 17th. NO SCHOOL FOR G1’s ON JUNE 10th. We are looking for any volunteer parents that would be willing to help with these sessions by being an extra set of eyes on the side or assisting in the water. If you are willing to help in the water then it is really important that you yourself are competent and confident in the water. Please send me an email if you are willing to help out. Really appreciate your help in this.
Happy Mother's Day to all the lovely ladies! We hope you like the cards.
