WEEK 5

The week has flown by so quickly...in a bit of a haze!! 

Before I start to fill you in with what’s been happening in class, let me introduce you to “Kids Up Front.” Please click on the Kids Up Front button on the top to open it and learn all about it. 

G1PTh have adopted a boarding house buddy this year. She came to meet us today and shared a little bit about herself. Her name is Namleg and she is from Cambodia. She has two two siblings in Cambodia and her parents are both doctors. Namleg has been staying at the boarding house for a four years now. She will be visiting our class and interacting with our students at least twice in a term and already, the children are excited about meeting her again soon. They gave her huge big hugs as she was saying her goodbyes to us! I would love you to get to know Namleg and provide her with opportunities to be with your family. The students at the boarding house do tend to miss home a lot. It’s great for the children to see that we are part of a bigger community and we have roles and responsibilities towards each other. During Mathematics, we have been using the hundreds board on our interactive board. We skip counted in 2’s this week...please ask your child about this. We have also been taking apart a two digit number, mostly teen numbers, into tens and units. Ordering numbers along a number line, ordering number words and addition stories are some of the activities we have been engaged in during our Mathematics sessions.

In Reading Workshop, we have started to learn strategies to decode tricky words. The first strategy of the week was “Chunky Monkey - chunk the word!” Readers were encouraged to look for a “chunk” that they know such as -art, -and, -old, -ing or look for a word part, such as -er, be-. This will help them to build upon their fluency as readers. Please try this at home when you are reading Just Right Books.

Children have been using a similar strategy when spelling tricky words during Writing Workshop. Instead of asking “How do you spell...” we will encourage them to use these strategies to become more independent during writing. 

There has been lots and lots of community talk in our classroom. Shabaz baked chocolate cookies and distributed them to everyone in class and Tara shared a lovely video about sniffer dogs at the airports. 

Mr Karl Wilcox enjoyed being in our class this week. He brought in his Singing Bowl to teach us all about Mindfulness. Please ask your child to tell you about mindful bodies and mindful listening. You might even practice one minute of mindfulness with them at home!

Tilly celebrated her 7th birthday in class this week...Happy Birthday Tilly!

Sorry we were not able to go for Forest Adventure...we will be rescheduling this to a later date. Watch out for this space!
