WEEK 6

We celebrated International Peace Day and UWC Day on Monday by talking about the importance of people in our communities. We had discussions on how our positive actions and thoughts make a huge difference to our world, and even if we are little, we can make a big difference...just like the proverb, “little drops of water make a mighty ocean!” The children designed a school logo with a partner, using an iPad and we had some very creative ideas and suggestions. We started the week with our Assembly on Service Ms. Andrea Naylor, head of Primary School Service, talked to our children about what service learning looks like in our grade and how we can support our local school community. She shared a lovely short movie of our friends at KUMA school in Phnom Penh and we learned all about the residents at Happy Lodge Home for the Elderly in Tampines. 

Talking about service, thank you to parents for expressing interest in our G1 Community Challenge (Amazing Race). We were able to take only 5 for this challenge...if your name was not on the final list, we still hope you will be able to sign in for other activities this year. Please do come along on the day of the race and join us even if you are not on the volunteer list. The timings for our class challenge are 10.15 to 11.30am on October 2, 2015. 

In Reading Workshop, we are learning to decode using a range of strategies. Last week, we learnt ‘chunking word’ and this week we learnt ‘stretchy snake’. We are getting better at sharing books with a partner, complimenting each other and asking questions. 

During Writing Workshop, children are really motivated and enjoy sharing their writing with their friends. This week, we learnt that when writers think they’re done, they’ve only just begun. This means that children are encouraged to add details to pictures, add interesting words or feelings, and see if what they’ve written makes sense. We’ve also been learning synonyms to words commonly used, such as ‘happy,’ ‘fun,’ and ‘went’. 

Ms. Jae read us a lovely book about the story of Hari Raya and later, we watched a video. To families who celebrated Hari Raya this week, warm greetings to you and all your close friends and families! Eid Mubarak! On a similar note, please encourage your child to take part in ‘Kids Up Front’.
