The photos captured in this weeks blog are a true testament of how engaged and enthusiastic the children are in their learning at school. It has been a super hectic week! From next week on, we hope to have children post their individual blogs that will show what they have been learning at school. We are in the process of setting up these blogs with the help of Ms Keri-Lee, our Digital Literacy expert and coach.
The week started with G1 students shopping for the elderly at Happy Lodge. The pod was set up like a big shop with tables carrying goods such as toothpaste, shampoo, wet wipes, chicken essence and so on. Our parent volunteers manned the tables/stalls and children used Math counters to purchase the goods. Each child had a tally sheet on a clip board and a shoebox in hand to do their shopping. Once that was done, the children put a red envelope “hongbaos” and a photo made by K1 students to add to the box. Our K2 friends helped make the wrapping papers and our class volunteers came in to help with wrapping up the shoe boxes. This required a great deal of collaboration and the children were fantastic! We are so proud of them for being so independent, focused, driven and taking pride in what they were doing. A big thank you to our parent volunteers who supported us as shopkeepers on this day and to those who came in for the packing. We really appreciate the time and commitment put in by you and for all the support you extend. A big thank you to Tami and Susanne for giving up their time to go shopping for all the Grade One classes!!
We delivered the shoebox packages on a very wet Wednesday afternoon with much fan fare! The children sang songs and danced to the elderly at Happy Lodge. They even made speeches! The residents were truly touched and were so so happy. It was amazing to see the enthusiasm with which our children performed and interacted with the elderly folks. All of us teachers are so proud of our G1 students!
This is a great link up to our brand new Unit of Study, “Service Starts With Me.” We have been thinking about why is service important to us and how we can be of service to others.
Mother Language Day
It was wonderful to have a try at so many languages on Mother Language Day. We had a fantastic time moving between the stalls and learning the colours of the rainbow in so many different languages. A big thank you to all the parents who put so much effort and time into making it so special.
In Mathematics, Ms Nicole Trip visited our classroom to teach us Number Talks and look at effective strategies in adding and subtracting. We have been playing many fun games in Mathematics. Please ask your child about the “scissors, paper, stone” game in Mathematics as well as the game where we used playing cards. We are beginning to emphasise the relationship between addition and subtraction, encouraging the children to consider this connection and not think of the two as completely unrelated operations.
This week, we have really enjoyed exploring MyOn on the iPads with the help of our lovely librarian Ms. Barbara Reid. This is a wonderful resource to support both our “Non-Fiction” unit in Reading Workshop and our “Informational Writing” unit in Writing Workshop. Your child would have brought in their unique Username home so that they can continue to benefit from this resource at home. We will be working with the Library team to give the children the strategies to search for particular areas of interest and create different book lists.
